Sombrio beach, located on the western side of Vancouver Island, features a rugged, high energy coastline along the cascadia subduction zone, illustrative of a leading edge coastline. With slow weathering processes, much of the beach is rocky headland with a large strip of cobble shore featuring large berms. Within this varied shoreline, vertical zonation of species is evident from the douglas fir dominated brushline full of salal and oregon grape to the lush tidal communities of sea anemones, eelgrass and kelp forests. With strong connection to first nations history as part of the Ditidaht territory and the implementation of the beach into a protected and recreational site, Sombrio beach has a high value through place attachment. These biogeographical features and history of human use highlight Sombrio as a site worthy of integrated coastal management as part of the Juan de Fuca Provincial Park.
